:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from DantheMan -- *Warning*: Will Make You Think! : Crime and Punishment can be read two ways: the first is to enjoy the dynamics between characters, resonate with the theme of true love, feel the effects of evil, and be gripped by the power of the conscience (micro level). This is primarily how I read it. ( Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2017 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tom Dolan -- Better than any other translator, Constance Garnett knocks the reader out of the armchair! : "Out of Shakespeare, there is no more exciting reading than Dostoevsky" -- Virginia Woolf. I agree. I would like to add that, in all of Dostoevsky, there is no more exciting reading than "Crime and Punishment." Let me take that a step further. In "Crime and Punishment," there is no more exciting reading than Constance Garnett's translation of THE climactic exchange between murderer Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov and detective Porfiry Petrovitch: ( Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2018 )
- 1.0 out of 5 stars from Rocko -- Poor translation - otherwise a great book : What I learned by reading this copy of Crime and Punishment was that, if you are going to read a book that was written in another language, first do a search to find out which translator is rated the best. The translator in this particular version of the book was awful. Some of the sentences simply did not make sense at all. About half way through, I DID do a search and she was not listed as the most understandable translator. I muddled through anyway and really did enjoy the book and then watched the video on Amazon Prime by BBC but learned a valuable lesson about translators. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Ankita -- Intense! A Timeless classic! : A month back when I started reading this intense psychological thriller by the famous Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881) little did I know that this work will recast my notions about crime as well as punishment. As the name suggests, the novel revolves around the very concept of crime and the consequent punishment imparted for it. Without superfluous tracks in typical Dostoyevskian style, it questions a very basic thing- if one kills an epitome of the evil, a vile vermin to save hundreds of innocents, how can it be called a crime and who can decide the befitting punishment for the same? - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Arthi gomathinayagam -- Helped me reflect at my depression! : So I bought this after Jordan Peterson suggested in one of his lectures. I loved how it touched upon the themes of human emotions so intricately. I travelled along with Rodion to realise my own bullshit. ( Reviewed in India on April 5, 2018 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gaurav Bisht -- A great Read. You Should Buy it. : I don't feel qualified to give a Dostoyevsky book a literary review. I may say though, if you are even slightly thinking of buying this, just do it. And you will end up liking his writing so much, you will purchase other books (after this, buy The Brothers Karamazov). - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Newty1977 -- Classic : Dostoyevsky at his best. A classic piece of literature, which - to be honest - takes some reading. The level of detail sometimes has one tuning out but that's no blight on the work and/or the author. I tend to find myself zoning out more in thought and reflection on the basis of the detail and picture painted by the author, which is credit to Dostoyevsky. One is transported to the bleak scenes and primitive sense of living in Petersburg at this time, which is so poignantly painted along with the feelings of the characters. Despite the heinous crime committed by the lead character, Dostoyevskys fashion of writing has you feeling empathy for him throughout. That's powerful. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from little_miss_chatterbox -- Breathtaking : Crime and Punishment is set in Russia in the 1800's. It is written from the perspective of the protagonist Raskolnikov; a young student. Despite its reputation as being hard going, I found it easy to read and impossible to put down.
