I happily agreed and was given an advance copy of the book. The premise of the book is that traffic engineering has unspoken and often unconscious biases that favor speed and volume over safety and cost, resulting in unsafe and expensive infrastructure better scaled to fast moving automobiles than pedestrians, yet still creating immense traffic congestion. Chuck Marohn's first book, "Strong Towns," discussed a number of topics that set the foundation for this more recent treatise on America's transportation system. He explained many of the problems I had noticed myself without truly seeing the root causes. Chuck concisely explained the differences between the way we currently build our cities and the organic means by which they evolved in previous centuries. This is a book about engineers, not *for* engineers (though they should read it too!). What's we're building isn't working. Doing *more* of it isn't going to help. We need to do something different. Chuck Marohn and Strong Towns are showing us how we could build a truly 21st Century Transportation System. Read this book. Send a copy to your mayor or city councilor or the head of your state DOT. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Sarah Robertson -- Excellent follow-up to Strong Towns : This is the book I wish Marohn had written when I was reading his first book, Strong Towns. It takes a complexity approach to urban design, focussing mostly on cars and streets (though there is a chapter on public transportation). It is concrete and specific, which I find important when talking about complexity. There are some humorous bits to liven things up. Much of it is new and can't be found on the Strong Towns website or YouTube channel, or at least it isn't collected together in one place. An absolute gold mine for anyone who cares about pedestrians, cars, and cities. It's not a light read, and took me about three sittings to get through, but absolutely worth it.
